Meanwhile the Japanese fans are out en masse to see him - they were lining up/camping out at the entrance to the arena before 3 a.m. this morning. The police even came to check what was happening and "went away in awe". Guess why the event was a sell-out

thank you Elizabeth, I just watched it and I am not sure whether I like the program. It seems sometimes the skaters and coaches think she or he or they are ready to do more dramatic stuff, but it does not always suit the skater's style. In my opinion Kaetlyn does much better when skating a lively show tune performance. I wonder what her "Carmen" would look like. In any case that fall must have knocked the wind out of her.
While I was there I watched Tessa & Scott's short and long program. Love the long, not so much the short. Having said that their skating is just amazing whatever they do.

The 49th Nebelhorn Trophy is a Challenger Series event it is also the Olympic qualifier - an opportunity for countries not yet having spots for skaters to compete in each of the disciplines at the Olympics to have those spots achieved. "Up for grabs", I believe, are 6 spots for ladies; 6 spots for men; 4 spots for pairs; and 6 for ice dance. Also at stake is the opportunity to have a team competing in the Olympic team competition. I believe that there are currently 7 teams confirmed: RUS, CAN, USA, JPN, CHN, FRA, and ITA with 3 spots remaining open. They will likely go to 3 these 4 countries - GER, KOR, CZE, and AUS.

The entries list has changed quite a few times since originally posted, including the disappearance of Patrick Chan's name among the men - the latest lists in each discipline can be found here: http://www.isuresults.com/events/fsevent03111453.htm
Note the "D" following the names of some entries, indicating that they are not skating for Olympic qualification, i.e. their country already has a spot/spots in their discipline for PyeongChang. This includes Canadian teams skating in pairs and ice dance, for example.

About Hanyu, wow! He made it look so easy! It seems to me that he does better with the SP but has some stamina problems with the FS a lot of the time. When he finished his FS this time he said something to Tracy and she said (lipreading) "well, we'll figure it out". I guess part of it is his youth. I've been enjoying hearing Debbi Wilkes commentating. I also like how comments are left until the end of the performance. I like this "new" trend!!

It has apparently been announced that the French Federation will not be using their second pairs spot at the Olympics. This means that 5 country spots will be available at Nebelhorn.

Although the ice dance team from Denmark won a spot for their country at the Olympics, there is a citizenship issue, which, I understand, impacts the number of spots available at Nebelhorn.

Thanks so much for the information Elizabeth. I don't seem to really know of any of the skaters in this competition, so I'm going to be watching the junior grand prix as there are Canadians and others I've heard of.

The competitor for Malaysia at Nebelhorn was Julian Zhi Jie Yee who trains in Barrie, ON. He was 22nd at Worlds last year.

• GER

• JPN

• KOR

• SVK

As mentioned earlier, there was a sixth spot available as Denmark earned a spot by their Worlds finish but their dance team cannot compete as Laurence Fournier-Beaudry will not be able to get Danish citizenship in time.

In some of the Olympic disciplines where Korea has not earned a spot, there may be a "host spot" added.

In the team competition, if a country has earned spots in three disciplines for the main competition, they may be allowed to add skater(s) in the fourth discipline. This is explained in the rule below. I believe this would currently apply to Japan.

And with the completion of the ladies part of the event, the final six spots in Olympic qualification have been determined - the countries (in alphabetical order) are:

• Australia

• Brazil

• Finland

• Sweden

• Switzerland

• Ukraine

I managed to catch the end of the men's event and saw the skater from Belgium. QUITE impressive
